In 2001, American icon Rolling Stone was facing competition from imports like Maxim and Blender, and owner Jann Wenner wanted a radical refocus for his title.

He hired Editor Ed Needham and Creative Director Andy Cowles to make Rolling Stone more news-driven and up-to-date. It worked: sales went up.

With responsibility for the news pages, I brought a fresh approach to the section, using shorter stories on a page, writing headlines and improving overall pace. More
